Artist’s Work A Mixture of Sweet and Sour
Northern artist Sarah-Jane Szikora has revealed why she thinks her work enjoys mass appeal.
The artist told the Journal that typical Sarah-Jane Szikora prints which feature gingerbread men and jelly baby characters are popular with a wide variety of people because they evoke memories of childhood.
Humorous Sarah-Jane Szikora prints include ‘Rude Food’, a picture of a gingerbread man pole dancing, ‘Mischief of Mice’, a portrait of a pied piper gingerbread man and ‘Bare Breads; which depicts naked sunbathing gingerbread men.
She told the newspaper: “I think it’s a nostalgic thing. I think people are sympathetic towards something from their childhood. And you can make gingerbread men do lots of things – everything that a human being can do.”
The appeal of Szikora’s work is the subversive nature of the paintings as they often show innocent confectionary characters performing mischievous deeds.
“You can experiment and have fun with that – people sympathise if they do something naughty! The jelly babies are a lot of fun as well,” Sarah-Jane told the Journal.
The artist has been involved in a protracted legal battle with a London gallery regarding issues such as copyright and this has resulted in Szikora’s work taking a darker tone.
Recent Sarah-Jane Szikora prints have included ‘The Defendant’, which sees a submissive gingerbread man in the dock and ‘The Root of All Evil’, a representation of a devil figure making sausages out of piggy banks.
Sarah-Jane Szikora has admitted that the dispute has had an effect on her work and most importantly her creativity.
She told the newspaper: “It’s so stressful and has been creatively very stifling. My work is quite humorous, but it’s been taking a much blacker turn.”
The artist also spoke about how the evolution of her female characters from grotesque obese figures to slender, glamorous ladies may have been due to her previous struggle with an eating disorder.
“I’ve left that part of my life behind. Now the ladies are more elegant,” the artist told the Journal.
Sarah-Jane discovered her passion for art at the age of four when she emerged from eye surgery with a crayon in her hand.
Sarah-Jane Szikora prints have been displayed in several major British exhibitions, regular showcases in Selfridges and Harrods and more recently in America.
Picasso and Stanley Spencer have been cited as major influences on Szikora’s work and the artist has also been compared to Beryl Cook, which has pleased Saraj-Jane.

How To Make Delicious Sugar Cookies
I love baking cookies! Especially if I have an easy and quick to make sugar cookie recipe to stick to. However my favorite aspect is the decorating. That is just what transforms a basic everyday cookie into a delicious work of art. Let your creativity come out!
So the first thing we need to do is to make the cookies. There will be no creaming butter or sugar required. The dough is blended within a Food Processor. Simple as that..
Ingredients required:
2 ½ cups plain all-purpose flour
5 ½ oz unsalted butter, chopped
Pinch salt
3 tbsps sugar
2 egg yolks beaten along with four tbsps cold water
Pre-heat your oven to 400 F / 200 C. Cover two baking sheets with parchment or baking paper.
In the bowl of a food processer, mix your flour along with your butter till it looks like coarse crumbs. Insert your salt and sugar and mix for a second time till just combined, being cautious not to overmix the batter.
While the motor still running, add your Egg Yolk mixture and blend using the pulse button until it forms a shiny ball.
Take out of processer, cover in plastic wrap and cool in the refrigerator for thirty min’s.
Now grab the mixture from the fridge and divide it into small sized amounts for rolling. When rolling a single piece, keep the rest refrigerated. Work the dough out to a quarter inch thickness. Utilizing Cookie Cutters, cut out shapes, positioning the cutters as near to the sides as possible in order to reduce the amount of instances you re-roll the dough. Perform repeatedly using the leftover dough, after that mix all the remaining dough and re-roll.
Position upon your baking sheets permitting space for spreading and bake for ten or fifteen min’s or until they are a golden color. Take them our of your oven and keep the baking sheets on for another few minutes before putting them on to wire racks to cool off.
Permit the cookies to cool completely before icing and decorating.

1 cup icing / confectioners sugar
A few drops of vanilla essence
1 tablespoon of hot water
A few drops of Food Coloring
Sift your icing sugar in a bowl then include the vanilla essence. Slowly mix in your hot water till the blend is the uniformity of thick cream. Include the water a couple of drops at a time right up until you have your desired consistency. In the event that you believe you have included too much water and the icing is too gooey, merely include more icing sugar.
Place a bit of icing in to the middle, then simply use a spoon to spread out to cover the whole cookie. The icing will set rather quickly, therefore when you’re including additional decorations, you’ll want to operate fast before your icing sets.

History
Apple introduced its first true modems in 1984, the Apple Modem 300 & 1200 modems (V21/V22). Prior to that they offered a third party Apple-badged comparatively low-tech acoustic coupler. Those were followed by the industry standard 2400/data and combined 9600/fax (V29) Apple Fax Modem in 1987. Apple introduced the internal 2400 data/fax modem card for its Macintosh Portable in 1989 as well as released its last external desktop Apple Data Modem 2400. Only standard internal modems were offered during the 1990s through 2005, with the notable exception of Apple’s foray into GeoPort passive telephony modems which relied heavily upon the computer’s software and processing power rather than dedicated hardware (like Apple’s proprietary internal Express Modem). The Apple USB Modem is Apple’s first true external modem since the Apple Data Modem 2400 was discontinued in 1992.
As of September, 2009 it is no longer available in the US Apple Store but it still works (at least for fax) as of Mac OS X version 10.6.2.
Features
The Apple USB Modem supports V.92, Caller ID, wake-on-ring, telephone answering (V.253), and modem on hold. The modem is manufactured by Motorola. A device driver for the modem was introduced with Mac OS X version 10.4.3.
It retailed for US$49 at the time of its introduction.
Apart from using the Apple USB Modem for Internet dial-up and faxing, it is also being suggested as a low cost line interface (aka FXO interface) for telephony applications, such as for telephone systems (software PBX) and answering machine software.
The decision to drop the built-in dial-up modem is reminiscent of Apple’s decision to drop built-in floppy drives. With the rise of broadband Internet and the general availability of wireless networking, it is likely that Apple felt that it was of more use for people to have default wireless instead of default dial-up.
The highly-miniaturized product, about the size of a cigarette lighter and with a 4.6-inch long USB cable, won a RED DOT design award for good design.
Troubleshooting Tips
According to the Apple discussion boards, the magnetism of the MagSafe connector affects the USB external modem. Placing the modem away from the MagSafe socket on the farthest USB connector will keep your connection from dropping frequently.

Holly is my Guardian Tree
I was amazed and intrigued when I came across a particular tree mythology from ancient civilizations and thought I might share it with you guys.
During the ancient civilization, the Celts had a deep knowledge of the natural world surrounding us. They also have a calendar that’s sophisticated and was created by Ogma, the Celtic god of learning and eloquence. Their calendar contains letters which were characterized by straight or slanting lines carved in edges of stone blocks. The calendar is also called the Tree alphabet because the letters in the calendar takes the name of a tree revered by the Celts – the guardian tree. They believed that one’s guardian tree is based on one’s birth season.
I checked out their calendar and found my guardian tree: Holly. Holly is known and loved for its healing properties, beauty and strong wood. They can live for 250-300 years. Holly is characterized by glossy leaves and clusters of berries. These berries are poisonous to humans but important for birds. During the tribal gathering in early years, a successor of a celtic chieftain is crowned with a holly wreath. Today, it is the symbol of Christmas. Holly means health, happiness and wholeness. After taking this all in, I am planning on planting a tree in celebration of my next birthday. It sure would feel great giving back to nature and protecting the environment.

Kid’s Plays-How to Help Kids Put on a Play
Kids love the idea of putting on a play. Finding the right scripts to perform can be a challenge, and not as fulfilling for kids as creating their own show. Below are some great ideas for putting on plays that the kids can cast, rehearse and perform themselves! Kids also create their own costumes and set out of things they already have at home.
The players may also wish to create a “Box Office,” and make their own tickets and a VIP section for audience members who show up with cookies.
Twisted Stories-Young actors choose a story they already know and practice by acting the story told the traditional way. Next, the players change the story to make it more entertaining:
- Tell the story backward
- Change the setting or the time (Three Little Pigs in the Mall, or Cinderella in the Future)
- Create a story morph (blend two stories together)
- Add in strange props that they must use in the story
- Add a guest character-invent a whole new character that must fit in somehow
- Add a black cat-act out a series of stories, but they all must now include a black cat
- Twist the characters-each actor chooses a quirk such as being a kleptomaniac and adds it to his character
Tip: For the plays to really make sense, you’ll want to have a narrator who tells the story as it goes along.
A Book Becomes a Play-You can probably find most of these at the library. The books listed here are perfect for an “ensemble” cast. No big parts or little parts. Kids can choose a narrator based on who is oldest, and then put all of the other characters in a hat. Some characters may be doubled or eliminated depending on the size of the cast, but these books make wonderful plays when you have a group of ten-twenty kids.

Go Green with Eco Wedding Favors
Everyday we are told we need to be greener and more eco-friendly, so when it comes to your wedding try giving your guest some green wedding favors instead of more traditional versions. Going green with your wedding is not difficult and if you consider your favors along eco-friendly lines you will quickly see other ways you can ‘greenify’ your wedding day!
