Edible Flowers in Edible Landscapes
It is common that most people grow flowers strictly for their aesthetic value as not many realize that there are a lot of flower varieties that can be eaten. Flowers can bring amazing flavor and color to salads, and make stunning decorations for cakes and other dishes.
Flowers can also be used to make teas, and their flavor extracts can be used in cakes, frostings, candies, and other foods. Many flowers are also very good for you. Roses are very high in vitamin C, especially rose hips.
Nasturtiums and marigolds also have a decent amount of vitamin C, and dandelion flowers contain both vitamin C and vitamin A. If a flower is not poisonous, it is considered technically edible, but not all edible flowers are tasty.
Always bear in mind that you should be absolutely certain of what you are eating because some flowers have poisonous look-alikes! You should never eat flowers if you have hay fever, asthma, or other allergies.
Never eat flowers that have been sprayed with any type of pesticide. Be sure to choose only blossoms that have not wilted. Remember, even edible flowers should be eaten in moderate amounts.
Some people may still have minor reactions to large amounts of edible flowers. Some common flowering plants should NEVER be eaten. Lily-of-the-valley is one such plant which is highly toxic. Other flowers that should not be eaten include hydrangeas, daffodils, wisteria, lupines, hyacinths, castor beans, rhododendrons, sweet peas, clematis, bleeding hearts, oleander, and calla lilies.
This is just a partial list! Always carefully research any flower before eating it, and even check varieties of the same type of flower. For landscaping purposes, you should probably concentrate on perennials.

Grassroots Innovation – Semi Automatic Onion Transplanting Machine
Pandharinath Sarjerao More hails from Ahmednagar district, Maharastra, India. This area is rich in black soil and people generally are dependent on agriculture and horticulture. Pandharinath used to grow a variety of crops including onions and had to face a lot of difficulty in finding skilled hands for planting onion saplings during the peak season and hence, it used to become quite a costly affair. So, he decided to make a machine to automate the whole process. His initial idea to make a fully automatic machine couldn’t be realized and then he changed his mind to make a semi automatic onion transplanting machine.
Pandharinath’s semi automatic onion transplanting machine is driven by tractor and can simultaneously perform the job of transplanting onions, applying fertilizers and making irrigation channels.
There are several other onion transplanters also available in the market but this one is different from them. This transplanter has a unique design of blunt nose furrow openers for planting with fertilizer dispensing mechanism. The machine is dedicated for onion and so has 100 percent efficiency with the onion crop.
Recognition and support of the grassroots innovation
Pandharinath is quite famous among his fellow villagers for his innovations. He is a firm believer in god and leads a simple life and so he wasn’t very keen on getting patent rights on his innovation. His innovation was driven by the idea of improving the farmer’s productivity, farm yield and better margins on the onion crop as a whole. He also wants a high penetration of his innovation so that more and more farmers can be benifitted from it.
National Innovation Foundation (NIF), a nonprofit autonomous body under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India has recognized and supported his innovation. NIF has awarded this grassroots innovation in its biennial national competition for unaided green grassroots innovations and traditional knowledge. NIF has also filed a patent application for the innovation on behalf of the innovator.
He has been awarded with the title of “Most Progressive Farmer” for the year 2007 by the Indian Society of Agriculture. Maharashtra Government has awarded him with the “Krishi Bhusan Samman”. His innovations have been well covered by the national and regional print and electronic media.

Different Heart Tattoos and Their Meanings
Along with the angel tattoo, the heart tattoo is one of the most popular designs available. The heart can symbolize any number of different things, so for each person, the tattoo is a completely different canvas.
Throughout human history, the heart has represented numerous ideas. In ancient Egypt, for example, the heart represented truth, rather than love. The Greeks actually believed that all thought and feelings originated in the heart, completely discounting the brain! Today, though we obviously know that thought (and emotions) dwell only in the brain, we still give the heart sentimental value in terms of feelings. The stylized shape is usually colored red, probably signifying the blood that pumps in and out of the heart every single minute. It also is typically seen as a feminine symbol.
Today, people get heart tattoos in any number of different designs. Each is intended to symbolize something special to each person. Here’s a brief description of each heart design:
The Dagger: A heart with a dagger going through it is generally a symbol of betrayal or mistrust.
The Sacred Heart: The sacred heart is surrounded by the Crown of Thorns that Jesus wore on the Cross. The spines digging into the heart represent the pain and suffering that Jesus felt while enduring that hardship.
Two Broken Hearts: This is one of the most popular variations of the heart tattoo. Couples that will be apart for an extended period of time often each get one half of a broken heart, to symbolize their devotion to each other, and the idea that when they come together, their hearts will be one. When one person wears both halves, it might mean they have endured a broken heart sometime in the past.
The “Mom” Heart: This one is famous in prisons and biker gangs across the world. Many people feel that showing devotion to the woman that created them is the most important tattoo they can get. Importantly, your mother never changes, while that heart tattoo you have with the initials of your ex-girlfriend from college probably doesn’t Make Your wife very happy.
The Pierced Arrow: The heart with an arrow piercing through is a symbol of directed energy. This is Cupid’s sting of love.
Anatomical Design: This heart design is relatively new, and moves far past the typical symbolical nature of the heart tattoos of the past. These tattoos have often have stitches or a band aid, which indicates that the heart has healed. Anatomical tattoos are popular with survivors of heart disease.
Beyond these examples, you can take the heart tattoo in any direction you desire, and create Your Own personal symbolism. Perhaps flames escape out of the top of your heart, creating the effect of a heart on fire for someone else. Whichever design you decide to place on your body, make sure that you take the time to think about the repercussions. Tattoos are more or less permanent, while relationships are not. Don’t let a spur of the moment romance leave a heart on your body that turns into a scar, rather than a symbol of happiness and love.

Lego Star Wars Sets 2010: Three New Sets for Late 2010- AT-AT and More!
Star Wars Lego is the most popular of the Lego licensed waves, both when the sets are announced an on the secondary market when sets are discontinued. In 2010 Lego has released two waves of Lego sets, spanning the prequel and original trilogies as well as the Clone Wars TV series. In late 2010 Lego release their final wave of Star Wars sets for the year and there are some sweet sets to finish off the year.
The first set of this final wave is a midi scale version of an Imperial Star Destroyer. Set 8099 is similar in scale to last year’s Millennium Falcon release, set 7778, which was too small for minifigures but too large to be called a mini set, hence the term Midi scale. This is the fourth Imperial Star Destroyer release from Lego, following on the heels of the Ultimate Collector version in 2002, the mini version in 2004 and the minifig scale model in 2006.
The Midi Scale Star Destroyer will have 423 pieces and retail for $39.99. It is small and sturdy enough to be held by young hands and flown around the room so wins points for swooshability. Now that the midi scale Millennium Falcon has another ship to interact with, Lego might see an increase in sales for this new scale.
The second release in late 2010 is another fan favourite, the At-At. Surprisingly this is Lego’s third minfig scale release of the infamous imperial walker from The Empire Strikes Back. Previous releases came in 2003 and 2007, the latter being a motorized version that could actually walk using a battery power pack. This latest version, set 8129 will feature the figures C-3PO, Hoth Rebel, Luke Skywalker (Pilot), Han Solo, two Snowtroopers, an AT-AT Driver and General Veers so is set again in the Hoth environment, not on Endor as some fans were hoping.
However, fans disappointed by the lack of Endor love will enjoy the last release for this year, a large scale Ultimate Collector Series (UCS) version of the stylish Imperial Shuttle. Set 10212 will come with over 2500 pieces and, as a major bonus, the minifigures of Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, a shuttle pilot, stormtrooper and Imperial Officer. At First Impressions, it is a very impressive set that is sure to be in demand, regardless of the price point. Combining UCS sets with minifigures was certainly a hit with the UCS Millennium Falcon and it’s good to see Lego continue the trend.
Looking back on the Star Wars Lego releases of 2010 there has been a great mix of sets for different age groups and saga-era fans. The minifigures have been a mixture of awesome redesigns, welcome new characters and old faithful standbys. These last three sets are sure to please when they are released in the second half of the year and you never know, Lego may have a few more surprises up their sleeve for Star Wars fans.

GRANDMA’S WRAPPED TURKEY
Place dressed turnkey, breast up in centre of greased, wide,heavy foil. Bring ends of foil up over breast. Overlap fold and press up against ends of turkey. Place bird in shallow pan.
Open foil last 20 minutes to brown. Bake at 450 F, (230 C) according to time table.

Mix all ingredients together. Put in unbaked tart shells.
Bake at 450 F, (230 C), for 8 minutes. Turn down to 350 F, (175 C), and cook until brown.

1 ½ cups…………………………(375 ml)…………………sugar
3 eggs beaten
3 cups………………………………(750 ml)…………………flour
¾ teaspoon……………………(3.75 ml)………………salt
1 teaspoon………………….(4 ml)…………………..soda
1 cup…………………………………(250 ml)……………….canned mincemeat
3 tablespoons………….(45 ml)…………………water
1 cup…………………………………(250 ml)…………………walnuts
Cream, sugar and shortening. Then add eggs. Sift flour, salt,and soda together. Add to creamed mixture. Add mincemeat and water. Stir until thoroughly mixed. Add nuts and stir. Drop
from teaspoon onto well greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350F, (175 C), for 10-15 minutes.
YIELD: 4-5 dozen cookies

CLEANING TIPS
Before washing, it is essential that all stains be removed.
Sometimes Soap or hot water will set a stain and make its removal impossible.
Commercial cleaning supplies can aggravate your allergies and have long terms effects on your health. You can save on your house cleaning bill with very good results using less toxic substances.
Ø Ammonia – cuts grease, cleans windows, Strip wax off floors.
Ø Baking soda – cleans, deodorizes, polishes, and removes stains.
Ø Bleach – whitens practically anything, removes mould and mildew.
Ø Cornstarch – cleans and deodorizes carpets and rugs.
*Rug Stains: Use a solution of half water, half white vinegar.
Shirt or blouse stain: Just a little of water and cornstarch will remove.
*Grass stains: Dampen stain with cold water, and rub with plain bar soap. (One without moisturizers). The stain should come right out. Then wash normally.
*Toilet bowl: use tang, or sprinkle baking soda into the bowl.
Drizzle with vinegar. Scour with toilet brush. Cleans and deodorizes
Berry Stain: Place the stained part over a pot and pour boiling water over it from a height of about 2 feet so as to strike the stain with force. Plunge the stained part up and down in the hot water until the stain is removed. If stain is persistent, use Javelle water.
Peach Stains: are not easy to remove. Be careful not to wipe hands with peach-stains on a good napkin, towel or apron. Stretch stain over a pot of hot water and apply javelle water with a medicine-dropper. Do not allow it remain too long in contact with the fibres.
Javelle water rots even cotton and linen. Apply oxalic-acid solution to neutralize the alkali and rinse thoroughly in hot water. Several applications may be necessary.
Tea And Coffee Stains. Follow the same procedures as for berry stains above.
Blood and Meat-Juice. Never put in hot water as that sets the stain. Soak at once in cold water. Rub with soap and wash. A paste of raw starch mixed with cold water will remove these stains on flannel, blankets, and heavy goods. Repeat until stain disappears.
Egg-Stain:
Wash in cold water, then warm water and soap.
Mix 50-50 water, white vinegar. Great for stubborn carpet stains.
LIGHTSIDE
A man is driving up a narrow mountain road. A woman is driving down the same road. As they pass each other the woman leans out her window and yells, “PIG!”

Wood Furniture: To remove water stains, dab white toothpaste onto the stain. Allow the paste to dry and then gently buff with a soft cloth.

WARNING: DEEP-FRYING CRAZE
People can do themselves serious injury attempting to deep-fry their turkey. In the past deep-frying has burned down houses and put cooks in hospital.
Deep-fried turkey is juicy, and better tasting. However with this high risk method of cooking, besides the above, your turkey can end up charred by the resulting inferno.
There is an advantage of deep-frying due to its speed. Cooking time is 3 1/2 minutes per pound. A big turkey is done in less then an hour. If you are going to deep-fry your turkey use a commercial pressurized fryer, rather than vats on a stand.
An uncovered pan with a rack in the bottom gives the best results in roasting. Cooking time varies with preference.
For rare meat, 16 minutes per pound.
For medium meat, 22 minutes per pound.
For well done meat, 30 minutes per pound.
Add salt during or after cooking, not before. The salt flavour does not penetrate more then 1 inch. If the meat does not reach the desired colour during roasting, increase the heat to (500 F) for a few minutes before removing from the pan.
Methods of searing is subjecting the meat to a high temperature until it is nicely browned.
By Browning in an uncovered pan in a hot oven (450 F-500F).
By Browning in hot fat in a Frying Pan on the surface burner.
By Adding boiling water and cooking at boiling temperature until the outside of the meat has lost its red colour.
Reasons For Cooking Meat
To develop flavour.
To soften the connective tissue when present in large quantity. To kill any living organisms that may be present.
To make meatballs of even size, spread mixture in an ice Cube Tray and press the divider down to separate meat into uniform squares. Take out divider and shape squares lightly into balls.
Add a few drops of vinegar or lemon juice when making blueberry pie. Gives the flavour a pleasant lift.

BAR MIXES
After Dinner Special
1½ oz. apricot brandy
1½ oz. Curacao
2oz. Limejuice
Combine with ice; shake. Strain.
Add a twist of lime and ice.
Drop in the peel.
Can-Am Flyer.
1 ½ oz, Bacardi
1 ½ tsp. Limejuice
1 pinch sugar
Champagne.
Combine the rum, juice and sugar with ice.
Shake. Strain; fill the glass with champagne.
Non-alcoholic Drink.
Juice Punch.
2 quarts apple juice
2 quarts cranberry juice
8 oz. lemon juice
8 oz. Sugar
2 bottles ginger ale
Combine everything except the ginger ale.
Stir well. Add ginger ale plus chunks of ice before serving.
Don’t Drink and Drive
2 drinks taken within an hour by a person 100 pounds produces a .075 reading. One drink is equal to about 1.5 oz. of whisky or 2 bottles of beer. The rate of elimination for each hour after drinking has stopped is 015. A 200-pound person, after 1 drink produces a reading of .019, so you can see there is a big difference due to weight.
As a host it is your duty to make sure no one leaves your party impaired. Have some one drive them home.
